Your Service Dog Journey Starts Here

Pawsitive Purpose provides personalized service dog training and coaching throughout Kentucky. Whether you are just getting started or already have a dog, your program may include dog selection, foundational skills, disability-related task training, public access preparation, and ongoing handler support.

You Don't Have to Figure it Out Alone

Training your own service dog is one of the most rewarding journeys you’ll ever take—but knowing where to begin can feel overwhelming.

You may be wondering…

✔ Is my dog the right candidate?

✔ What if I don’t have a dog yet?

✔ How do I teach the tasks I need?

✔ Will my dog be ready for public access?

✔ Am I doing everything correctly?

✔ What if I make a mistake along the way?

You don’t have to figure it out alone.

With personalized coaching, you’ll receive expert guidance every step of the way—from evaluating the right service dog candidate to developing the skills and confidence needed to become a successful service dog team.

Two Paths.  One Goal

Every successful service dog journey begins with a professional evaluation. Whether you already have a dog or need help finding one, I’ll help you determine the best place to start.

Already Have a Dog?

If you already have a dog you’d like to train as a service dog, I’ll perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether they’re a suitable candidate for service work.

During the evaluation, I’ll guide you through a series of activities while observing how your dog responds to you, to me, and to different situations. I’m looking at qualities such as:

✔ Physical health and structure

✔ Temperament and emotional stability

✔ Confidence and resilience

✔ Motivation to work

✔ Comfort around people, dogs, and new environments

If your dog is a suitable candidate, we’ll create a personalized training plan designed around your goals and your needs.

Need Help Finding a Dog?

If you don’t already have a dog, I’ll evaluate potential puppies or dogs and recommend the candidate I believe has the greatest potential for your individual needs.

Rather than choosing the cutest puppy, I carefully observe how each puppy interacts with its litter mates, new people, and its environment. After identifying the strongest candidates, I’ll recommend the puppy I believe is the best fit for your individual needs based on factors such as size, temperament, confidence, attentiveness, natural abilities, and the type of service work they’ll be trained to perform.

The right service dog partnership begins with the right dog.

Common Questions About Our Service Dog Program

1. Is a service dog right for me?

Every person’s needs are unique. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your disability, daily challenges, lifestyle, and goals to determine whether a service dog is an appropriate option and what type of support may benefit you most.

2. Can you help me choose the right service dog?

Yes. If you don’t already have a dog, I’ll help evaluate and recommend a puppy or adult dog based on temperament, confidence, health, and the type of work the dog will be trained to perform.

3. What if I already have a dog?

Many clients begin with a dog they already own. We’ll complete a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether your dog has the temperament, health, confidence, and motivation needed for service dog work.

4. What disabilities do you train service dogs for?

We provide coaching for a variety of disabilities, including autism, mobility assistance, psychiatric disabilities, and certain medical alert and response needs. Training is customized to each handler’s individual goals and needs.

5. How long does it take to train a service dog?

Every team progresses at its own pace, but most service dog teams require approximately 18–24 months of consistent training to develop the skills, reliability, and public access behaviors expected of a working service dog.

6. Will I be involved in the training?

Absolutely. Our coaching program is designed to teach both you and your dog. You’ll learn how to reinforce behaviors, practice between sessions, and confidently work as a team long after formal training has ended. Our program is built around professional coaching, where I work directly with you and your dog throughout the training journey. My goal is not only to develop a reliable service dog but also to give you the knowledge and confidence to work successfully as a team for years to come.

7. Do you guarantee every dog will become a service dog?

No. Every dog is continuously evaluated throughout the training process. While we work hard to help each team succeed, not every dog possesses the temperament, health, or suitability required for service work.

If your dog is determined not to be an appropriate service dog candidate, we’ll explain the reasons, discuss your options, and help you develop a plan moving forward. Our goal is always to make recommendations that are in the best interest of both you and your dog.

8. How do I get started?

The first step is to complete our Service Dog Coaching Application. After reviewing your information, we’ll contact you to schedule a personalized Zoom consultation if we believe the program may be a good fit.
